For people of my parents' generation there was a formidable loss to overcome in losing the "greatest generation". Whether or not people were actively acknowledging that didn't matter as much as the effects of loss. Other civilizations and cultures had had similar experience.
Said to be the sundial of savages, the shadows where one can read the absence of the thing represented. Only during daylight of course.
