Being there, I wasn't here. Remember?
A somewhat blank stare.
How would I know if "they" are still whatever with you?
Maybe they moved.
Reacclamating, running, revisiting. Responses at this stage. As is packing and unpacking. Comparing crises and disasters. Planning for a future-based future. People against all that fog.
If only it really were as easy as story-plotting and character-building.
For Fascists in Europe, the contradictions were forcing identity. This happened, and then this.
Women encouraged to beef up the birth rate; raise the children as stock in the crop of nation. In a landscape, ghetto-ized and increasingly bereft of alternatives to the black stormy clouds of war. A total war mentality took hold. That wasn't by choice for most people. We in contemporary America can hardly imagine no choice.
Some of the art paintings from the old days in Britain that were recording the disbelief of (religious) war mentality show just landscape. The question hanging in the air, where are the people? is implicit.
It's why it is so important right now (2025) that Americans assert themselves as Reublican or Democrat. Both types of party-identifying contain common elements, like love of Country and the desire to protect the Constitution.
By degrees we are declaring ourselves to be something different, we are America, even in the shadows and chaos of warmaking totalitarian regimes elsewhere. We are Republican-led right now. It is Republican, contemporary USA, NOT fascist, not national-populist. It's critical to strengthen the description or we could, anybody could, deteriorate into a more total war response as political party.
Passmore says something important in this statement:. "Fascism has no special appeal to any social class...variations...actually tell us as much about political circumstances in individual countries as they do about fascism" (137). Because politics is the vehicle. And the politics of Europe and a lot of the world from 1880's through 1999 were completely shaped as a response to threat of extinction per war. And then were totally caught up in the succession of attending actions.
Wandering around in a starved-condition, receiving word that other Americans were similarly "holding ground" though scattered and losing hope, George Wahington in Valley Forge, also like 1943.
Feeling through living the notion that a Republic is not just a political vehicle.
