I am paying attention.
Wherever I go I have a host of the men and women who've come before me. So there's always learning that can happen. The memories of encountering each new endeavor seem to come back in a sensing of someone's personality and meaning. Being hushed by a grandma; spying a relative saving everything; stern looks from smiling nuns, even going up and down mountains those who've influenced us sometimes rush in to remind, othertimes come to mind quietly. For this working gal it's a ballast to ego and bossiness.
In the same way one might launch into a writing a work of fiction along those lines, we've produced no small amount of "historical" fiction and "historical nonfiction". That wasn't always a literary category. Some of the first TV shows about cowboys and soldiers, for example, would not have been considered the same as "period pieces" in drama-proper or "the theatre". All along the way in the evolution of literature and media and the arts, there has been "canon" fortified by Academia and other.
